About Acupuncture

Acupuncture leaf

Acupuncture is a painless traditional oriental technique in which diseases and health disorders are seen as an imbalance in the body's energy (Qi), which flows along well-defined pathways called meridians. By inserting very thin acupuncture needles at specific points along these meridians, a well-trained acupuncturist can normalize the flow of energy and prevent or treat illness by initiating the body's own healing mechanisms. Modern scientific study has confirmed that Acupuncture induces biochemical changes in the body that have beneficial effects.

Acupuncture is used to encourage natural healing, improve mood and energy, reduce or relieve pain and improve function of affected areas of the body. It is safe and effective and is often successfully used as an alternative to medications or even surgery. Relief is often obtained with acupuncture when traditional medical therapy has failed.

During a treatment, the practitioner manipulates extremely fine needles to strengthen or reduce the flow of Qi. Lifting, twisting, and rotating are some of the needling techniques a practitioner may use. Treatment length varies. The typical length is about 30- 60 minutes. The acupuncturist may also use the following techniques during the treatment:

  • moxibustion -  heating of acupuncture needles with dried herb sticks to activate and warm the acupuncture point. Also know as “moxa”.
  • cupping -  the application of glass cups to create a suction on the skin to relieve stagnation of the blood and Qi.
